Equipment and technology can provide reassurance for you and independence for the person you look after. From simple aids to sensor systems, there are many products already available to help make life a little easier.

Independent Living Centre

If you are not sure what equipment can help, you could visit the Independent Living Centre. Expert staff at the centre can demonstrate equipment for you and help you to choose the best equipment to meet the needs of the person you care for. Information and advice on suppliers and services is also provided.

As the centre doesn’t sell equipment, you can be sure that the information and advice they give is impartial and free and you will be under no pressure to make a decision. Some items of equipment can even be borrowed for free so that you can try them out with the person you care for.

Mi-Life Greenwood Centre, Maiden Castle Road, Dorchester, DT1 2ER.

Home adaptations

Adapting the home to meet the needs of the person you care for could make it easier for them to get around or carry out daily tasks. Many adaptions are relatively simple and inexpensive, but can make a big difference. For example, putting in ramps and handrails could make it easier for the person you care for to get around their home.

If you would like advice and information about home adaptations, including getting work done and applying for grants contact Dorset Accessible Homes Service or 0333 033 0010. Grants for installation of access equipment may also be available via The Leonardo Trust.
