It’s fair to say that the annual Winter Fuel Payment has been on a bit of a roller-coaster ride for the last couple of years!

After controversial eligibility criteria was introduced last year, the UK government has now thankfully made a much needed U-turn on the plans – meaning that more people than ever can benefit from this critical payment!

The changes (announced in mid May by Prime Minister Keir Starmer) outlined that the allowance will now be reinstated for older people earning less than £35,000 a year – restoring up to £300 of much-needed support this coming winter. Restoring this payment relieves immediate financial pressure for older people (many of whom are unpaid carers), helping them keep their homes warm as winter 2025 approaches.

As everyone reading this knows, the ever increasing cost of living has had a big effect on many carers mental wellbeing, and more financial worries are the last thing that carers need! Knowing that the fuel allowance will continue this winter will offer peace of mind to many unpaid carers all over the country.
