So, you are interested in our Carer Money Matters program, but maybe you’re wondering how we can really help?
Below is an in depth look at the kinds of things we can advise on – this isn’t an exhaustive list so if you have money queries that aren’t here simply drop us an email at admin@carersupportdorset.co.uk, and one of our expert Financial Wellbeing Officers will get back to you ASAP.
We are here to help improve your overall financial wellbeing. Whether you are worried about your own finances or those of the loved one you care for, we are here to answer questions and support with everything from saving on energy, reducing your monthly bills, debt and even helping with writing CVs and knowing your rights to benefits.
Saving Energy & Cutting Bills
We can offer practical, everyday tips for making your home more energy efficient. We could chat about switching to more energy efficient lighting, how to use your heating controls effectively, or identifying where you might be using energy you didn’t intend to. We can also help you understand your energy bills so you can make the best decisions for your individual needs. Even small changes can add up to real savings over time.
Dealing with Energy Debt
If you’re struggling to keep up with energy payments, we can support you by helping you set up a manageable repayment plan, exploring any grants or funds you may be eligible for, and looking at ways to reduce costings in the future.
Priority Services Register
We can also help you register for the Priority Services Register with your energy supplier if you are eligible. This is a service that gives extra help to people in vulnerable situations (including those being cared for). The register can help you get advance notice of planned power cuts, support during emergencies, and help reading your meters – all FREE of charge!
Debt, Budgeting & Benefits
We know worrying about money is the last thing you need on your mind as an unpaid carer, that’s why our Financial Wellbeing Officers can help you take control of your finances. We offer budgeting support to help you stretch your income further, advice on how to deal with debt in a manageable way, and we can also make sure you’re receiving all the benefits you’re entitled to!
Many people are missing out on financial support because they either don’t know what’s available, or they find the process of applying for the aid overwhelming. We can help you navigate the benefits system, including Universal Credit, Carer’s Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and more.
Carbon Monoxide Awareness and Support
We’re pleased to offer free Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms to carers who meet any of the eligibility criteria listed below. Don’t worry – you don’t need to meet all of them. Even meeting just one is enough to qualify!
When it comes to children, we don’t apply a strict definition of what counts as a ‘young child.’ If your household includes children, we’re happy to consider you eligible.
You may qualify if someone in your household is:
- Registered as disabled
- Living with a chronic illness
- Of pension age
- Caring for or living with young children
- Living in fuel poverty or generally poor housing conditions
Along with alarms we also provide support for people worried about CO in their homes. We want all carers to live safely and confidently at home, and that’s why our CMM team is raising awareness of the dangers of CO, the signs and symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning, and how to stay safe from it.
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, or would just like to have a chat about CO support, feel free to get in touch – we’re here to help.
Working Carers
We often see unpaid carers having to reduce their working hours (or even stop working all together) in order to give their loved one(s) the care they need. This can have a huge impact on, not just income, but confidence and self-esteem as well. If you’re thinking about getting back into work or just want to know what your rights are as a working carer, we’re here for you.
We can help with:
- Writing or updating your CV to a good standard
- Searching for flexible or part-time work
- Preparing for interviews and building confidence
- Understanding your rights at work, including flexible working, carer’s leave, and protection from discrimination as a carer
Our goal is to help every unpaid carer feel more confident, better informed, and in control of their finances. All the support we give is free and tailored to your individual situation. Whatever you’re facing, you’re not alone and we’re here to help and support you in any way we can.
