Carer Support Dorset (CSD), the lead organisation that supports Dorset’s unpaid carers has celebrated the registration of the 3,000th carer with its service.

Established in November 2019, CSD offers information, advice and guidance to carers across the Dorset Council area via a Freephone number, website, telephone befriending, online workshops and Virtual Cuppa sessions. CSD also issues the Dorset Carers Card and can make referrals for Care Act carers assessments.

The number of people identifying as carers has increased since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Research from Carers Trust’s Social Care Survey 2020 also showed that one in six (16%) carers reported that lockdowns and closure of local services have forced them into caring for an additional 40 hours or more per week. Many carers have also faced increased isolation due to lockdown restrictions.

Carer Support Dorset Manager, Anna Elston, comments:

“We are delighted that Carer Support Dorset has been able to continue offering support to Dorset’s unpaid carers over what has been an incredibly difficult year. Our service continues to expand and has adapted to new ways of connecting with carers.

“We would urge anyone who is looking after someone, such as a relative, friend or neighbour, to get in touch with us to find out more about support that may be available to them.”
